Angkor Wat & Ta Phrom (Half Day Morning Tour)

Visit the magnificent 12th century Angkor Wat. It is visually, architecturally and artistically breathtaking.

Angkor Wat is a massive three-tiered pyramid crowned by five beehive-like towers rising 65 metres from ground level. Suryavarman II constructed Angkor Wat in the form of a massive ‘temple mountain’ dedicated to the Hindu God, Vishnu.

Continue the visit to the famous Ta Phrom, embraced by the roots of enormous fig trees and giant creepers. It was built in the 12th century by the famous King Jayavaran VII dedicated to his mother.

While clearing back the forest, archaeologists decided to leave the vegetation of Ta Phrom in place to serve as a reminder of how the original discoverers found it. Many of the trees have grown around and through the remains and soar high above the temples.

Banteay Srei Temple, Banteay Samre Temple and Landmine Museum (Half Day Morning Tour)

Excursion to Banteay Srei temple known as women citadel (built in 967 AD dedicated to Brahma), located twenty-five kilometres north of Angkor Wat. While some of the temples are impressive because of their sheer size, Banteay Srei stands alone in the quality of its construction and decoration. Its pink sandstone walls are decorated with what some consider the best carving of all, and still an excellent state of preservation.

On the way back, visit Banteay Samre, a large, flat temple displaying distinctively Angkor Wat-style architecture and artistry, and the Cambodian Landmine Museum and Relief Centre. The museum was founded by ex-soldier Aki Ra, to tell the world about the horrors the landmines had inflicted on Cambodia. He used the proceed to clear landmines and began bringing home wounded orphan children that he and his wife raised as their own. Today the museum not only tells Aki Ra’s unique story and the history of landmines in Cambodia, but it is also home to over two dozen abandoned, orphaned or destitute children.

In the afternoon, visit Banteay Kdei, Ta Som, Neak Poan and sunset at Preah Khan (built in late 12th century) by Jayavarman VII dedicated to his father. Preah Khan is a huge, highly explorable monastic complex with carvings, passages and photo opportunities. It originally served as a Buddhist monastery and school, engaging over 1,000 monks. For a short period it was also the residence of King Jayavarman VII during the reconstruction of his permanent home in Angkor Thom. Preah Khan means “sacred sword”.

Angkor Thom & Phnom Bakeng Sunset (Half Day Afternoon Tour)

In the afternoon, start a tour of the temples in Angkor Thom built by Cambodia’s great King, Jayavarman VII. An eight-meter high wall encloses this ten square kilometre city, which is encircled by a moat. Stop at the south gate of Angkor Thom for taking some photos of Gods on the left and devils on the right. The famous Bayon, in the geographical heart of Angkor Thom, is a remarkable 54 tower temple.

Initially the temple appears to be a shapeless mass of grey and brown stone, but it is only as you get closer that you realise every tower has the carved face of Avalokiteshvara on it. The next temples to visit are Baphoun, the Terrace of Elephants and Terrace of Leper King. Return to the hotel after the sunset at Phnom Bakheng.
